A vicious killer kidnaps Finney Blake, a meek but intelligent 13-year-old boy, and imprisons him in a soundproof cellar where crying is useless. Finney learns that he can hear the voices of the killer's prior victims when a disconnected phone on the wall starts to ring. And they are adamant on protecting Finney from experiencing what they did.
