The Presley family moves into a run-down fixer-upper in Chicago in search of a new beginning, but they quickly learn there's a catch: Ernest the ghost lives in the attic (David Harbour). Despite Ernest's attempts to frighten his teenage son Kevin (Jahi Winston), the disengaged, music-obsessed youngster quickly recognizes this captive soul from the 1970s as a kindred spirit and decides to assist him. While everything is going on, Kevin's amiable yet strict father Frank (Anthony Mackie) wants to capitalize on Ernest by making him famous on social media. As Frank's video of Ernest goes viral and draws worldwide attention, Dr. Leslie Monroe (Tig Notaro), a retired paranormal researcher, notices the family and contacts her former supervisor, Deputy Director Arnold Schipley of the CIA (Steve Coulter), renewing their relationship.
